Travellers Rest Farm Sanctuary has given permanent homes to many horses over the years. Our sanctuary horses never leave the farm and remain with us until their passing. Some only stay for a short time, while others stay with us for many years. During their time with us, they receive 365/24/7 access to hay, shelter, and water. They also receive medical and farrier treatment as needed, along with daily feedings. All the horses bring something unique to the farm and leave imprints on our hearts despite how long they stay. 

Our primary mission is to provide a safe haven and safety net for horses in compromising, at-risk positions, or those pulled from neglectful and emergency situations. While we wish we could take in every horse, our space and resources are limited.

While our mission remains unchanged, we understand owners are looking to permanently retire and transfer the ownership of their personal horses. Because horses frequently live into their late 20s and early 30s, absorbing the lifelong costs for healthy, owned horses solely through our own fundraising is no longer sustainable. Our dual-intake policy offers a solution for both paths.

• At-Risk & Emergency Intakes: Horses pulled from auction lots, law enforcement encounters, or severe, documented neglect situations—as well as those facing documented financial hardship or other extenuating circumstances—will continue to be accepted at no cost, provided we have the physical space and resources available.
• Ownership Transition & Retirement Requests: For owners looking to fully retire their personal horses with us and permanently transfer ownership, a one-time donation is required based on the tier of placement chosen below.

• Standard Retirement Track: $3,500
  This ensures your horse will live in a herd (of our selection) with suitable shelter, hay, and grain. They will be blanketed and cared for as our own.
• "Select Field" Placement: $5,000
  For owners wishing to ensure their horse has a specific, restricted, or semi-private pasture setup rather than our standard herd placement.
• Bonded Pair Placement: $7,000
  For owners surrendering two horses together and wishing to guarantee they remain together as a bonded pair for the remainder of their lives.

To maintain a safe environment for our volunteers and our resident herd, we enforce strict intake boundaries. We will accept mares and geldings only, no stallions. We do not accept horses with significant behavioral issues. Horses must have no history of biting, kicking, or striking. Unfortunately, we can' accomdate draft breeds or mules.

Before arrival, owners must provide veterinary and professional records confirming the horse is completely current on the following: vaccinations, Coggins, dental float, and farrier (no shoes).

By requiring owners to responsibly fund their horse’s retirement transition, we can preserve our emergency funds and physical stalls for the horses who have absolutely nowhere else to go. Thank you for your cooperation and for respecting our mission.
